Hendrix’s London Home Open To Public

Jimi Hendrix’s home in London is to open to the public as part of an exhibition to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of his death.
The Handel House Museum will host the exhibition which includes clothing and memorabilia as well as handwritten lyrics by Jimi himself.
Hendrix lived in a flat in 23 Brook Street, back in 1968, with his girlfriend at the time, Kathy Etchingham. Handel House Museum is, strictly speaking, at number 25 Brook Street but the buildings at 23 and 25 now form a single building. The top-floor …

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

The story has had some to and fro today but it seems that the worst has been confirmed:  Ronnie James Dio has died.
I spent my formative years listening to Dio.  I cut my teeth on Rainbow and Black Sabbath and I loved his solo work.  I had tickets to see Heaven and Hell perform in a month or so.  His passing has left a void in the heavy metal world and I am truly saddened by the news.
As most fans probably know, Ronnie has been fighting stomach cancer for the …

Never Go Guitarless – How To Keep In Touch

For a couple of reasons, I recently had to surgically remove the Guitarless Facebook page.  It was a long and painful operation but I’ve now successfully grafted a new page on to the side of Facebook’s torso (I considered its forehead but felt it might get too much teasing at school).  Given the changes, I thought I’d take the opportunity to let you have a round-up of the various ways and means to keep in touch with Guitarless news.
News Feed:
First and foremost is the RSS News feed.  If you’ve no …

Lick Library – Free Live Webcast

Following the success of their previous live webcast, the Lick Library are set to do it again.  This time with an improvement…
You may remember that, last time round, we mentioned that timezone issues meant running a single, global webcast would inevitably mean the time wouldn’t suit some people in the world.  The Lick Library have addressed this issue with their second Live Webcast.
Yep, there’s two.
So then, on the 11th or March, Lick Library will run two webcasts at different times to allow people to tune in at a time that …

Good Times: Johnny Marr’s Stolen Guitar Returned

Johnny Marr’s Gibson SG, which was stolen ten years ago, has been returned.
After a gig in Scala nightclub, Kings Cross, in 2000 the guitar was stolen by a fan.  The ‘fan’ apparently came across the guitar backstage and noticed it was unattended.  On a “spur of the moment decision”, he picked it up and walked out a fire escape.
The guitar, a 1964 SG in cherry red would normally be worth around UK £6,000 but the prosecutor in this case forwarded an estimated value of £30,000 because of the link with …

50th Anniversary Gibson 1960 ES-335TD

I’m in danger of shorting out my keyboard with long strings of spittle as I read the specs and look at the images of Gibson’s latest.
Hot on the heels of the 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul, comes the 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD.
Is it telling that I’m much more excited by this one? In the last few years I’ve been more and more drawn to the 335 and its semi-hollow yumminess. Perhaps I’m mellowing in my old age.
There is simply no denying, though, that the ES-335, and these ones in particular, …

Lets Hear It For Les (2): 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul

Even Gibson themselves think it’s absurd that the original Les Paul was sufficiently unappreciated that it should be discontinued.
But, discontinued it was.  After 1960, Gibson would stop making Les Pauls.  Well, for a bit anyway.
Weird to think about that now, isn’t it?
To celebrate the (rather odd when you consider it) anniversary of the Les Paul being pulled from Gibson’s line-up in 1960, The Big G has released this: The 50th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard.
There are three variants of this beauty.
Version one will be finished in Heritage Cherry or a …

Gibson Comments On Alleged Price-Fixing Lawsuits

That’s a Gibson logo over there but Gibson aren’t the only ones caught up in a series of legal actions that accuse Gibson themselves, Fender, Yamaha, Guitar Centre and the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) of meeting to agree price fixing arrangements. The plaintiffs in these cases claim the alleged cartel is in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.
The industry association denies the charges but their attorney has declined to comment pending litigation.
Gibson, however, have commented.  This was published earlier today, 27th January.
Official Statement from Gibson Guitar Corp

Fender Acoustasonic Tele

Look closely.
See that?  That’s a rosewood bridge with an acoustic saddle on there.  But it looks like a Tele bridge.  If you’re going to make a hybrid-type guitar from a Tele, that’s a nice touch.
And that’s what this is.  The Acoustasonic Tele is fitted with a Fishman Aurasystem to allow realistic, acoustic tones from a Tele.  It’s also got a regular, magnetic neck pickup to give more traditional (electric) Tele sounds.
Cool, eh?

The magnetic pickup is a Custom Shop Twisted Tele single-coil.  Its controls are on the front plate as per …
