A new website, which aims to be – among other things – a social network for guitar-lovers and collectors has just gone live.

dbTwang hopes to become the world’s largest online guitar database, allowing its users to store information on their guitars and browse other’s guitars.

You will be able to view profiles of individual guitars, see images and read information about their history.  You can even ‘follow’ a particular guitar to track it and you can interact with its owner.

One of the aims of dbTwang is to record the ‘provenance’ of your guitar.  The idea is that, if you record the history of your guitar, it will make it more valuable when it comes to selling it on.

And on the subject, dbTwang – which is currently in beta – aims to allow guitar trading between members in the future.  So, if you’re a member who is buying a guitar from a different member, you can see that instrument’s history before you buy.

Good in theory.

If you want, you can use it to simply store information about your collection, should one ever be stolen or whatever. There is an option to keep your collection private if this is just what you want.

dbTwang has some ambitious ambitions – namely to have 4 million members by 2015.  Basic site services will be free of charge but a premium service will be available for a monthly fee.  Details as to what the premium service might include are still to be announced.
